Hello to everyone from CherokeeMike. I've been a big fan of Elmer Keith for a long time. I enjoy reading his books, stories and loading information. My biggest regret is not writing him a letter years ago and receiving a personal response. That would be something to treasure! My favorite all-around cartridge is the .44 Magnum. I have the following firearms in this caliber: - Model 29 Smith & Wesson (Yes, I bought it in the late 1970's after watching Dirty Harry - Ruger Redhawk. - T/C Contender Pistol. - T/C Encore Rifle. - Desert Eagle. - Early Winchester Model 94. - Ruger Deerstalker. - Ruger 44/77 Bolt action. - Ruger No. 3. - Universal Vulcan Model 440 Pump. - Remington Model 788. - Marlin Model 336. I look forward to sharing information and enjoying the fellowship of other .44 Magnum supporters. |

Thank you, ace. At one time I owned a Super Blackhawk Bicentennial model. It was used as a trade in for the S&W Model 29.
In the late 1970's, after the first Dirty Harry movie came out, Model 29's were scarcer than a Republican on Pelosi's Christmas card list. I found one for sale in a wooden presentation box for $400, take it or leave it price, thank you very much. That was over $100 more than they listed for back then.
I didn't have many dollars and/or "sense" and decided I wanted a double action more than a single action. IIRC, I paid $220 and my Super Blackhawk and drove 125 miles back home with my new gun.
Now I only shoot cat-sneeze target loads in the 29, and relegate my Hammer-of-Thor handloads to my Redhawk. Years ago I also owned a Marlin Model 1894 lever action carbine. One time I decided to load up some blackpowder cartridges to try out in it. I'll bet I cleaned that gun six times and never did get all of the crud out of the internals. I'll never do that again!!!!

I've shot metallic cartridge black powder re-loads in my .45 Blackhawk, know what you mean about the cleaning. Cylinder pretty much quits rotating after about 50 rounds. Dish soap and hot water cleanup in the kitchen sink. Wasn't to bad.
