After reading your post a few times it got me thinking of a 5x5 elk I took in northern Utah back in the `90s using a Interarms .375H&H. The load was
82.0grs of RL-19 under a Speer 270gr SPBT. It was the last day of a 5 day hunt when we came upon a group of elk across a canyon. The first shot was good, missed twice and caught him one more time and ran out of ammo. Took a Ruger 44mag my brother was carrying and found him in the pines about 20yds from first hit. The remaining elk ran over the hill straight into some poachers that fired about 10 rounds. Our guide was able to get their liscense plate number that was turned over to a most beautiful female Fish & Game officer.
That was a hunt to remember.....

PS- I had a 1.5-5X post crosshair scope that was made for eastern hunting and had no businees being on a rifle in Utah. Walked through some timber a tripped over exposed tree root and the scope hit the ground. The guide set up a small rock at 100yds and I wound up getting a wicked cut over my eye.
Like I said above "that was a hunt to remember".....(Please excuse the double repeat of the same photo)
