Does anyone have an interest in Double rifles, and African hunting? Or just the Big Boomers?

I am a new member just noticed your post. I have owned and hunted with a number of different English built doubles. I have also hunted with many large bore bolt actions by far the English double gun handles better carries easier. In thick bush ranges under 75 yards their is no better hunting or stopping rifle.

I definitely have the desire, just not the resources! If I still lived up above Bonner's Ferry, I'm afraid I'd have to have one, just in case of a jurassic Elk invasion!

Would love to own a double in 470 or 500 but could not afford one, however I got a good deal on an early Ruger m77 mk2 in 416 Rigby. I brought it to Griffen & Howe who installed their hooded front sight, shortened the stock forend, and sodered a half barrel band for the sling attachment. After the scope made a good cut over my eye from recoil I had Mag-na-port put their brake on he barrel. This cut the recoil to where I can shoot it from the bench without getting bashed in the head. Put 3 of Federals 400gr solids inside an inch at 100yds. This rifle and my FA`s 454 were the only 2 guns I took to Africa and the 416 accounted for most of the game I hunted. Great gun...

The 416 Remington or Rigby is the caliber I have recommended to our clients for many years it is far superior to the 375 and not too much for most people to handle. The Ruger 77 is about as good of an over the counter rifle you can buy. By the way congratulations on your Weatherby award!

If I had to hunt Africa with only one rifle for dangerous as well as plains game it would be a 416 with a detachable scope. I would rather be a little over gunned on the plains game than under gunned on dangerous game. In fact this was the case about 15 years ago when I did an exploratory hunt in Mozambique I took my pre 64 Winchester custom built in 416 Remington.
