I posted this on another forum thought it might be of interest:

This is a 500 A Square that Alphin built for me in with his traditional tree trunk stock and barrel mounted scope. At the time I objected to the scope as in those days I used open sites on all dangerous game guns feeling anything that reduces field of view and distorts distance a handicap. After a close disaster on an elephant charge which ended in my drilling two .510 diameter 707 grain holes from stern to lungs on a jumbo. You cannot say the caliber lacked penetration.

Anyway I liked the caliber not the package so I sent it off to Frank Wells who restocked it added steel open sights, a muzzle brake and an internal stock recoil reducer. This was the worst recoiling rifle I had ever shot and I also had a .577 Farquensen that weighed less but was easier too shoot. Of course on game the recoil was not noticed.

This was truly a stopping rifle but you had to get used to shooting it without developing a flinch. We used to play with it cutting down trees on a friends heavily wooded property.

The buddy I sold it to eventually sold it and it showed up again for sell with an action mounted scope scope!!!!!
