We were camped out a few years ago and one of the riders for a local cattle association dropped into camp to talk and share a beer.  The grand kids recognized him from prior years, knew him, his girl friend, and his dogs by name.

We sat around talking a while when one of the kids asked where Tammy was.  He had 4 cowdogs the year before but was shy one this trip.  The cowboy didn't say much, kept talking about his new rifle - H&R in .500 S&W. The kids asked again, where's Tammy?  It didn't work out he said.  Kids being kids, they didn't drop it, what do you mean it didn't work out?  He quietly pointed his index finger towards the ground, thumbed back an imaginary hammer and squeezed the trigger.  The kids got the point, it DIDN'T work out.

The conversation shifted back to rifles, cows, and predators. The wolves had been howling close by the night before, sounded off at a distance again. Put more wood on the fire and passed out another beer and listened to the cowboy talk about the wolf problems his neighbors were having.  They had lost one cow on Bertha Hill, another down by Dent.  He hadn't lost any here. Kids asked where Nancy his girlfriend was. Oh, it didn't work out he said. Absolute silence from the kids!  Every one of them sat there tight lipped and stared at the flames.  The cowboy finished his beer, called his dogs in and rode off.
