Got a little problem here, maybe there are some Elmer Keith/ Diesel types out there that can help...
99 F350 Western WA This winter very hard starting/ white smoke. not that cold, around 35 deg problem shows up. Waiting 1-1/2 mins for the gp's to get good and hot helps a little. Went through all the cold weather advice on the truck forum, dosen't quite fit. Batteries good, etc. Almost ready to take it in to "The Most Expensive Shop in the World" (Ford Dealer). Filled up in Eastern WA 3 days ago and now it starts without waiting for GP's to heat. Fires almost instantly. Didn't even wait for the "wait to start" light to go out this morning, 32 degs out. No white smoke. It appears the diesel in Wenatchee works a lot better then the diesel in Seattle. Low sulfur/ no sulfur? Is this likely and what can be done? (besides moving to AZ) Additives? Try adding some Power Service to the fuel in the winter. The stuff I'm referring to is what comes in the white plastic bottle. They make at least 3 different types. One is an injector cleaner, the red one is for when you're totally gelled up and the white one is a conditioner to lower the gel point of the fuel and clean the injectors. Use the white one.
I learned about it in Missoula, Mt about 12 years ago. Had to attend a funeral in early January, stopped a Lolo to fuel up on the way home, was a cozy -22. The pumps had three types of diesel. #2 diesel(will not mention the prices then), 50/50 #1/#2, and #1 diesel. #2 was the cheapest and what I'd always used so I filled up with #2. Went inside to pay and thaw out. Asked the attendent what the gel point was in the #2. He had that deer in the headlight look. So I asked if it was climitized, still had that deer in the headlights look. I convinced him to call the manager who called the distributor who said "it's not climitized - gel point is 20 degrees, you should have used #1 in this temperature." You know that little voice in the back of your head that sometimes says "oh crap" - it was talking to me. Got a ride to NAPA, learned about Power Service and have been using it ever since. Had no problems drive home with a full tank of plain #2. __________________ chg |

Thanks, I'll check it out. Just did a voltage test in the batteries, after running for an hour or more, voltage showed 13 V when running and connected, when disconnected showed 12 V. checked draw with everything off .1 milliamp drain (probably the light under the hood). Turned radio for comparison on about .4 milliamp. Al I work at a walmart warehouse and receave most of the fuel for our truck yard. I add 5 gallons of this stuff to every truck load of 7500 gal of diesel we put in the ground. It's good stuff. Bill |

Yes, that it it! I've used it for years and never had a problem. Usually buy a quart in mid November and run 1/3 rd of a bottle each fillup through most the winter. __________________ chg |

If it continues, or if your going to be in cold weather, have the glow plug relay checked. My 96 Powerstroke use to got through these about every 3 years (Eastern Washington) and I would know when it was going out by the cloud of white smoke when I did get it to turn over. The relay is a cheap part and easy to install. Also, when's the last time you changed the glow plugs or had them checked. I remember one time I had about 3 of them dead and didn't even know it. They are a little tricky to replace, you had to pull the valve cover off on mine, don't know what the 99 is set up like, but I imagine it's not much different both being a 7.3 liter. People are finding that the 7.3 Powerstroke was the best one they ever built, especially the 99-03 versions. I had 252,000 on mine when I let it go and it was running strong as ever, The wife just thought I needed a new truck and I didn't argue. Not sure if you know this but buy the parts from International as they are MUCH cheaper than Ford. |

The power systems stuff in the white bottle solved the problem. I had checked the relay, and the resistance on the GP's, both good. My battries are 4 years old, 12.0 VDC after sitting for 8 hrs, that contributed a little to the problem, but after running through about my first half tank with the power systems, it fires quickly and seems to be getting better milage. just filled up yesterday, added the other half of the bottle, going to check milage this time. Probably replace batteries next time I see a good sale.
