I was wondering if anyone cared to comment on whether or not keeping a blued steel gun in a holster for extended periods of time damaged the finish? I have always kept mine in cases when not in use but I see quite a few pictures with old guns stored in holsters. Thanks, Chris

Welcome, Chris. Glad to see you got in here and posted. Don't keep my guns in leather but don't know first hand, just rumors that its not good. Brass, however, I know first hand leather beats up pretty bad.

Humidity and the quality of the leather used in constructing the holster would be two big factors.  I have seen some revolvers from the east side of Montana which were stored in leather holsters for periods of years look like new when removed from the holster.  I have also seen some come out of a holster that made you feel sick just looking at them.  I store mine on rubber coated steel racks in the safe.  The one that's not in the safe is stainless, is loaded and kept in an El Paso Saddlery holster.

I keep them in nylon holsters that Velcro to the inside of the safe carpeted door easy access and with the dehumidifier rod no worries about rusting or sweating.

Depends on the tanning chemicals used. Some cheaper holsters may use chemicals that can help corrode the guns along with moisture the leather picks up from the atmosphere. Better holster makers generally use leather that has the proper tanning process that avoids that. The key is low humidity and all will be well. However, I keep my pistols in Boyt handgun rugs/cases when not in use. Cartridges can definately become corroded in belt cartridge holders if left in too long. No matter what leather used.
