I was at the range today and sorry to say I haven`t shot the 44 much lately, I need a little help or advice, I have done a lot of things to all kinds of firearms but one thing I never tried to do is handgun stock work. I am getting split in the web of my shooting hand with target grips that I had Herret make for me in the sixty's, a lot of things happen to your hands over time, swell stretch new bumps old breaks etc.Should I go after grips with a dowel and sandpaper then refinish or find a stock maker let him have at it with the dremel tool, I have 3 pair that every one needs some relief somewhere on the grips. I like wood and blued steel handguns,,,Rubber is nice for rain and stainless is easy to clean...I want to shoot blue and walnut with out splitting the web of my hand the load isn`t too much and I`ve been shooting 29`s since 1976 am I getting too old to handle the recoil or do I just have to get a good grip?

Sell the grips and go with a more conventional non target style grip so the recoil is not transferred to the web of your hand. I too have a set of target type N frame grips that came with a 1950 44 target I cannot use them comfortably on anything larger than a 45 acp.

There are a number of after market grip makers  reasonably priced and you can sell your Herrett's.

I called a gunsmith I know he said bring them down and he`ll have a go, I can shoot the stock grips pretty well but they are a little small I`ve got too big of a mitt I guess.
Going thru the extra stocks last night I found a new pair of target grips that I had forgotten about they need just a little tweaking and they should do well on the 10 5/8 29 I think the reason I forgot them is there blond in color but a nice walnut anyway.
Sell the grips? My son would have a bird! It`s like we are married what`s his is his and what`s mine is his seems like.

The reworked Herrett target grips are back they feel good like a glove I have to go to the range to fire a bunch to see if anymore tweaking is in order, they definitely do feel like they will transfer the recoil evenly through out the hand, I had him cut the thumb rest down a bit more to get my hand more level with the gun, dosn`t seem to "pull" to one side like before if this works I shouldn't~t have to mess with they again or until the hand again out grows the grip, another 30 years I hope,Thanks be good if you can if not be careful!!
