HI LEE,  IN HIS "BOOK OF THE .44" JOHN TAFFIN TELLS OF A SEMI-AUTO .44 MAG THAT WAS MADE BACK IN 1978 AND MADE BY A FELLA NAMED JON POWERS AND TESTED BY J.D.JONES.  POSSIBLY LOOKING LIKE A COLT WOODSMAN OR SOMETHING THERE-LIKE ?  I DO REMEMBER READING SOMETHING ON IT WAY BACK WHEN, BUT THOSE MAGAZINES ARE LONG GONE.

Chris, I have the article with pictures on that 44 auto in one of my file folders. Give me a little time to locate. I think it may be in my shop in work.That was an interesting design and a good looking handgun. I believe
Mr. Jones used it to drop a coyote. Today is Saturday so you will have to wait until Tuesday because I`am going to the range on Monday.

I have a really good color scanner if that would be any help.

Would you be talking about the AMT AUTOMAG that shoots the .44amt Round made from the .308 winchester case?

Hi Dave,  No, not the AutoMag.  But an experimental .44 that took the standard .44 Magnum  rimmed cartridge.  It was developed by a fella named Jon Powers back around 1978 and Pistol-smith J.D. Jones did a write up on it with good grades. It looked sort of like the old Colt Woodsman .22 LR semi-auto.  Another member here on the forum "Jamesfromjersey" sent me a copy of the article.  It was a pretty neat looking handgun that unfortunately never got off the ground.

I spoke to J.D.Jones awhile back, and mentioned the Magmatic. He remembered it well. I beleive he told me the person that made it only made 2 and never got the backing for financing a company. No call for a semi auto 44 mag at the time. He told me how it operated, very similar to the Magnum research. But it was very trim, looked like a 22 Woodsman on steriods. The grip was too far from the rear to the front to make good purchase for the shooting hand. But it would have been great, and we need something like this now, more than ever. Make it affordable,blued, with wood grips.
Blued guns are stronger than stainless, and the actions can be made smoother. Wood grips always look better than plastic, or anything else, other than ivory.

any luck with Jon Powers? Many times these things go south as far as phone numbers, especially these days with everyone dropping the land line, and going with Cell service.
I am trying to find the original magazine article I have on the gun.
Something else J.D.Jones had, that an aquaintance of mine got. 454 Casull casings, necked down to 22 caliber, for the Wickliffe Rifle. It was done in the 1976,77 time frame by J.D.Jones. He had a bunch of the brass laying around, so he sold it to my friend.
That should be a real thumper on groundhogs. Supposed to do 4000 fps. No loading data availiabe.
I have an article about Elmer that I will post, about him shooting the Wickliffe Single Shot rifle, at the Y.O.Ranch in the 1976 time frame. Veru good article, and fantastic shooting, especially by a man that was drinking Chivas Regal like water. Elmer really put one on when away from home.
